Entry #1 Music is my Refuge
Hi Readers,
For some people, their parents sang the classic
lullabies like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, however, my little ears heard my
mom's harmonious voice singing, Angel
Baby by Rosie and the Originals. She said that was the only song that
soothed my colic cries. This set the tone for my love of music. Music has not
only become a hobby of mine, but a coping skill as well. In the wise words of
Mya Angelou, "Music
was my refuge."
If I'm being honest, I was frequently
grounded in my teenage years. I was allowed to keep my Walkman and stereo. I
had nothing better to do than explore the many different genres of music. Back
then, there were no websites for lyrics, so I took it upon myself to learn the
words and write them in a notebook. I devoted hours rewinding songs and jotting
down the words. My love for music became so great that I dreamed of becoming a
DJ. However, I settled for burning CDs for friends and family with the
assistance of LimeWire. To this day, I can recite the words to what feels like
a million songs. Even though there are websites like AZ Lyrics, I still find myself hitting the repeat button and learning
the words myself.

Music apps like Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, and Soundcloud have taken the place of LimeWire. You are now able to
create playlists, read lyrics on a screen, and watch music videos. If you're an
aspiring musician, you can upload your music to gain exposure. Music has
evolved beyond my expectations. As I said before, music is not only a hobby but
a form of therapy. I came across a poem I'd like to share, What Is Music To
You? I encourage you all to take a moment to
read it.
I also wrote about music being a form of therapy for me. I like how you recited specific lyrics. I find it so smoothing when a song or lyrics can perfectly encapsulate a feeling it gives you hope like someone else is experiencing this too.
ReplyDeleteI love the style of this blog, as it feels really comforting and it definetly added to the way I read your blog! I didnt actually even get into music until I was 15 (Im 18 now), so I cant imagine how much you must have, and I too love to learn the lyrics by playing a song on repeat haha. Its really cool to see how much you have gained from music, and I hope that I can too!
ReplyDeleteMusic is a big part of my growing up and my daughter's as well. It seems like you and I grew up in the same era, I recall using LimeWire to download all of my favorite songs and burning it onto CD's to play in my giant stereo or Walkman.
